He was traversing the glassy, sapphire ice when he heard it—a faint, distressed whimpering carried on the frigid air. Following the sound, he approached a strange, sunken depression in the ice, a former well or ice-fishing hole, now partially refrozen. Peering down, his heart sank. Trapped in the icy water at the bottom
