Occasionally I’ll turn a spindle without my steady if I feel I’ll not lose time, hand steadying is then used. With this style the square can make normal techniques awkward I’m more comfortable keeping my fingers away from the squares, so I steady in the center and turn one handed. I’ve stopped the lathe to show this still gives a clean finish even on wide open grain pine. The skew is by far the best tool for turning a taper IMO. These 800mm long beech tapers are simple and a skew which ever style you favour gives the best results. I see many turners even some professionals who avoid the skew but it’s worth mastering.
